Springtime Propane Safety Tips To Keep In Mind

Spring is a time for enjoying the outdoors, firing up your propanepowered grill, and maybe even taking a relaxing dip in your propane-heated pool or hot tub. While propane has an excellent safety record, it’s still important to brush up on your propane safety knowledge. Here are some key tips to keep in mind:

  • Regularly inspect your propane appliances for damage, especially after storms or extreme weather conditions.
  • Check your propane gauge levels to make sure you don’t run out of fuel. If you become an automatic propane delivery customer, worrying about fuel supply will be a problem of the past!
  • NEVER use outdoor propane appliances indoors, and never store a propane cylinder in an enclosed area, such as a garage or basement.
  • Consider installing a propane gas detector. Detectors can provide an additional level of security for everyone, and we strongly urge you to get one to protect yourself and your family.
  • Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. In the off chance your propane equipment does create carbon monoxide, an alarm will sound, and you can evacuate to a fresh air location immediately.

If you suspect a propane leak, don’t panic – here’s what to do:

  1. Put out any open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cellphones, as flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or a fire.
  2. Leave the area immediately and get your family and pets to a fresh air location!
  3. If it’s safe to do so, turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank by rotating it to the right (clockwise).
  4. Give us a call at (518) 891-3151, or call 911 for immediate assistance.
  5. Do not return to your building or area until it’s deemed safe to do so.
  6. Have us check your system before you attempt to use it again! We’ll do a thorough inspection to help ensure that it is leak-free.
