Propane is a very safe fuel – but it is a fuel, and needs to be treated carefully. Here are some important tips for handling your propane safely and getting more fun out of your propane appliances.
First, know the warning signs of a possible propane leak:
- Smell: Propane is treated with a chemical to make it smell like rotten eggs. If you smell this, get everyone out of the house as quickly as possible and call our offices or the fire department.
- Propane alarms: These detectors can identify leaks even if you can’t smell the propane.
- Hissing sound: A hissing sound could indicate the gas is escaping from a component of your system.
- Unusual usage: If you are using more gas than you expect, there could be a leak.
If you notice any of these, call us immediately to review your home equipment!
Prevent Propane Problems
There are several steps you can take to protect your propane appliances and your home.
- Pilot lights – lighting or troubleshooting pilot lights improperly can cause fire and explosion. Call the propane professionals at Hyde Fuel if a pilot light goes out!
- Air flow – your propane appliances need air for proper combustion, and exhaust gases need to be able to flow outdoors. Keep the area around your propane appliances clear and check vents for obstructions such as animal or insect nests or build-ups of snow or ice.
- Safe spaces – never store anything that can burn, such as papers, clothing, gasoline, or solvents, near appliances. This includes cleaning fluids, paint thinners, and other flammable liquids or anything that emits flammable vapors.
- Don’t stress – appliance connections can crack or break when flexed or twisted, such as when an appliance is moved. Use care when cleaning or working near connections.
As always, call Hyde Fuel or the fire department if you suspect a leak. We are here to help you with all your propane equipment needs! Please call us at 518-891-3151 if you would like a copy of the new consumer propane safety brochure.
